7 Tricks To Free Up Space On Your IPhone

Running out of the storage space is the most annoying thing that iPhone users tend to encounter. If you are willing to pay, it is recommended to buy a brand new iPhone with a larger storage capacity that could satisfy your storage requirements. But that’s not the only solution for you, there’s still hope. Here in this article I will show you how to free up space on your iPhone with these amazing tricks. Some of these require just a few taps.

1. Don’t Double Save Photos

Are you fond of using Instagram a lot or have been using iPhone’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode? You might have noticed that your phone automatically saves two different versions of the same photo. Normal version and the HDR version in case of HDR Mode and a filtered, cropped copy of the picture you have uploaded in case of Instagram.

  • To stop double saving your HDR Photos, open up Settings and go to Photos & Camera. If you scroll down the page you will see Keep Normal Photo next to HDR (High Dynamic Range), untick the toggle button next to it.
  • If you are using iPhone 7 Plus or higher, you might also find Keep Normal Photo option next to Portrait Mode on the Photos & Camera settings screen. Untick this toggle button as well to avoid double photos in case of Portrait Mode.

  • To stop double saving your Instagram Photos, open the Instagram app and go to your Profile page. Tap on the gear icon in the upper right corner to open Settings and untick the toggle button next to Save Original Photos.

2. Shoot In High Efficiency

If you are looking to free up space on iPhone 7 or newer with iOS 11 installed, Apple has a new feature for you. This feature is known as High Efficiency compression format. It saves your photos in HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) instead of JPEG and your videos in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) instead of H.264.

  • Go to Settings > Camera > Format sand select “High Efficiency” instead of “Most Compatible”. This feature saves pictures in almost 80% smaller sizes as compared to JPEG. Apple claims that the users would be able to save as much as double the number of photographs using High Efficiency.

3. Delete Unused Apps to Free Up Space on iPhone

I won’t discuss much about this as I believe this is the first thing most of us do to free up space on iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage and delete the apps that you don’t frequently use. In iOS 11, there’s another amazing feature called “Offload Unused Apps”. This feature automatically uninstalls your unused apps when your iPhone is low at storage. Head into Settings > General > iPhone Storage and then click “Enable” under this feature.

4. Stop Storing Texts Forever

I love Snapchat for one reason, it automatically deletes every message you send after it is opened. It saves every tiny bit of your local storage. But that’s no the case here. iPhone stores the text messages you receive for almost forever unless you tell the iPhone to delete them automatically. Just go to Settings > Messages and down under the “Message History” tap on “Keep Messages” and set the time you want. A pop-up will ask you if you want to delete older messages; tap Delete to proceed.

5. Backup Old Photos & Videos to iCloud Photo Library

For most of us, photos and videos are the number one reason to have storage issues on mobile phones. As the camera is getting better with newer versions of iPhone, it is demanding more space to store photos & videos. And if you are using the slow-mo feature, it requires even more storage space. To address all these issues, you should timely backup your photos & videos to an online cloud service and delete them from phone. It’s not necessary to use iCloud Photo Library, you can set up any service like Google Photos, One-Drive or Dropbox etc. Free storage spaces varies with the service you choose. And like iCloud Photo Library, you can set up other services to automatically work for you instead of doing it manually every time.

  • Tap on Settings.
  • Choose Photos & Camera.
  • Turn ON the option for iCloud Photo Library.
  • Make sure the option for Optimize iPhone/iPad Storage is selected.

6. Delete Photos & Videos In Messages

Do you love to share photos and videos through messages? Well, guess what? They are occupying the precious storage space on your iPhone, and most probably as duplicates that you already have in your Photos app. To free up space on your iPhone, you will have to scroll down manually and select and delete the messages.

If you are using iOS 11, you won’t have to do this manually. Just go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and select “Review Large Attachments”. Now, you’ll get a complete list of all the attachments you used to send in Messages. Tap “Edit” and select all the ones you want to delete and you’re good to go.

7. Clear Your Browser Cache

When you use Safari, your phone automatically saves web history, cookies and other data etc. This data is of no use to you, so frequently clear up this cached data to free up space on your iPhone. To clear Safari’s browser cache, open up the Settings app and tap Safari. Scroll down and click Clear History and Website Data.
