More primary school students should get free school meals

Dan has called for more primary school pupils to receive free school meals.

Dan's comments came during Free School Meals Week which is taking place this week to highlight the benefits of pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receiving a free, healthy school meal at lunchtimes.

Over 16,400 five, six and seven year-olds across Cornwall became entitled to free school meals since a new Government scheme began back in September.

The Children's Society hailed the free school meals scheme as a "positive step in the fight against child poverty."

Now Dan would like to see the next government look at extending the scheme to other primary school pupils to make sure that more pupils and parents enjoy the benefits of free school meals.

Dan said, “Liberal Democrats in government are providing a free school meal for all children in reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Not only does this help parents with the cost of living, but the studies and pilot schemes clearly show that giving young people a healthy meal at lunchtime which they can all enjoy together helps to boost concentration, raises behaviour standards and makes sure that no child is left behind."
