Cornwall Council must not renege on commitment to Camelford Leisure Centre
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, is calling on Cornwall Council not to backtrack on their commitment to keep Camelford Leisure Centre open for another year, after it emerged that less than half the funding needed has been secured.
The Council stated that they would make funds available to keep the facility open for another year which would allow a working group to be set up in order to fully examine the case for keeping it open. But at the first meeting of the newly established group last Monday (15th November) it became apparent that less than half the money needed had been provided by the Council.
Commenting he said,
“The situation surrounding the possible closure of the leisure centre has shown the Conservative led administration in a very poor light throughout. Firstly no Cabinet representative attended the meeting organised by concerned residents back in October and then it appeared that there was no answer as to how important services such as swimming education would be offered to Camelford and the surrounding area.
“Now, after claiming that they would keep the Centre open for another year, it becomes clear that they have not provided the funding they promised in order to make this happen. I am urging the Council to stick to the commitment they made to the people of Camelford and allow the Leisure Centre a genuine chance of survival.
