Call for action on Boscastle insurance problems

Local MP, Dan Rogerson, spoke in Parliament this week of the problems suffered by Boscastle businesses and householders in getting insurance claims paid, following the 2004 floods.

During the passage of legislation on compensation arrangements for flood victims, the North Cornwall MP called on Ministers to ensure that insurers pay up on time.

Speaking in the House of Commons, he said, “As the MP representing Boscastle, which experienced problems because some of the insurance companies were based overseas, I think that that is crucial.”

Commenting afterwards, he said:

“It’s bad enough when lives are turned upside down by flooding, and livelihoods are put in jeopardy by the damage.

“When the worst happens, people need a prompt and sympathetic response from their insurance companies.  Yet some found their insurers quibbling and delaying, looking for ways out of meeting their responsibilities.

“I will continue to press the case for tougher rules to make sure insurance firms have to do the right thing, and do so quickly, even when the company is based overseas.  If you sell a UK policy, you should comply with UK law.”
