Bude boy wins MP’s Christmas Card competition

Tom French, aged 10, from Bude Junior School has landed top prize in Dan Rogerson’s Christmas Card competition.
The North Cornwall MP invited local schools to produce a design for his Christmas cards every year since he was elected in 2005.  The lucky winner gets a £25 book token, presented in person by Mr Rogerson.
Sam Garner, 6, from Cardinham School and Dyra Aquino, 11, from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Bodmin, won second and third prizes, also of book tokens.  Both runner up designs are reproduced inside the card, while Tom French’s winning picture, featuring a Cornish flag and the message “Have a proper Christmas and New Yer” makes top spot on the front.
Mr Rogerson sends approximately 1200 cards each year, to keep in touch with family, friends, local agencies, and supporters.  This is not funded by taxpayer.
Commenting, he said:
“One of the great things about Christmas is that you get in touch with people all over the country – and beyond – that you might otherwise lose touch with.
“I’m very lucky to have a lot of my family nearby here in Cornwall, where I grew up, but Tom’s card will also making its way to friends as far away as Hong Kong.
“Tom’s design features the words “Welcome One and All”, so with St Piran’s flag, it really neatly conveys that Cornish spirit of being different, and proud to be, but welcoming people from all over the UK and the rest of the world to be a part of our communities.
“It was difficult to choose between the designs, since so many were of such high quality.  Sam’s piece featured Jamaica Inn, which is emblematic of the moor, and Dyra even put “Merry Christmas” in Cornish!
“Thanks to all that took part.  And in Dyra’s words, Nadelik Lowen!”
