Communities’ “Resounding support” for village schools
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, has written to Council Leader, Alec Robertson, following the clear result of a referendum in St Tudy and St Mabyn on the future of their village schools.
Mr Rogerson says the Council must now work with the Diocese and the Action Group to find a way forward.
He has offered to request a meeting with Ministers from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, in Whitehall.
Commenting, Mr Rogerson said:
“It was an excellent initiative on the part of the St Tudy and St Mabyn Action Group to hold a referendum of this kind.
“Its results simply could not be clearer. Now the Council and the Diocese must listen to local opinion and find a way forward.
“These schools rightly have resounding support among their communities, not just because of the high quality, local education they offer, but because they are at the centre of village life.
“The loss of a school can all too easily mean the loss of other amenities too, as ‘footfall’ through the village diminishes and local businesses lose their trade.
“Our villages should be more than just collections of houses and having good village schools is an important part of that.”
