MP meets Bude carer
Local MP, Dan Rogerson, has visited a group of carers in Bude to discuss the problems they face.
The meeting came as the Government published its Green Paper on care, entitled Shaping the Future of Care Together. Ministers are consulting on how care should be funded in future, with options ranging from people paying for all care themselves to having an insurance system or having all care paid through a tax funded system.
The carers’ group explained the tangle of bureaucracy they encounter when applying for assistance with care charges, and for Carers’ Allowance. Some carers also face a funding shortfall when the person they look after goes into temporary hospital care.
Commenting, Dan Rogerson said:
“Carers do an incredible job, looking after people close to them, and in so doing providing better, more personal care to the person in need, and saving the taxpayer thousands each year.
“But they are getting a raw deal. Carers’ Allowance is less than generous anyway, and absurdly it gets cut off when the person being looked after goes into hospital care for more than a few days.
“It’s a complete misunderstanding of how people’s incomes work – how should a carer find alternative employment for a few days or a week at a time, particularly when jobs are so scarce? People doing this work deserve a secure income, and proper recognition of what they do.
“I encourage anyone with experience or expertise in this area to look at the government’s green paper, and to let me know their views.”
