‘No’ to scrapheap for Launceston Court

The closure of Launceston Magistrates Court would move yet another rural service away from the people it serves, according to North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson.

Mr Rogerson is encouraging residents to make their views known to the Government’s consultation on their plans over the course of the next twelve weeks.

The Government announced its intention to close the court in a statement to Parliament today (Tuesday).

Commenting, Dan Rogerson said:

“The local court service has been run down by the neglectful underfunding of successive governments.

“I want to know just how much money the Government believes it will save by closing the court. When they proposed to do the same thing ten years ago the predictive saving was so small the closure could not be justified. What has changed since then?

“Before placing the local court on the scrapheap, the Secretary of State for Justice should visit Launceston and see how long he has to wait before a bus to Bodmin comes along.”
