Airport project took courage – MP
Responding to publication of John Mills’ report on the closure of Newquay Airport last year, local MP Dan Rogerson said:
“The report reflects the reality that the Council took on an ambitious project in keeping the airport alive, and there were risks attached.
“There is some evidence that those risks could and should have been shared with contractors, keeping those responsible for doing the work involved in the timetable, so that the taxpayer would be protected. Doubtless the Council will want to learn that lesson.
“However, had councillors not shown the political courage to go ahead, Cornwall could well have been without an airport today, and without the economic benefits it brings. It would have meant further business and more jobs going east, as Exeter and Plymouth became still more entrenched as regional hubs.
“Today we can proud of Newquay’s developing role in the region and in the country as more and more airlines embrace it, bringing more people and trade into our local economy.”
