Lib Dems win key vote on Ghurkas’ rights

Dan Rogerson MP with Andrew Stunell MP meets Ghurkas outside the Houses of Parliament

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, spoke up for Gurkhas’ rights in the Commons debate today, and delivered news of the Government’s defeat to the House.  MPs backed the Lib Dem motion by 267 votes to 246

Scores of Liberal Democrat MPs then joined Gurkhas at a special rally opposite the Palace of Westminster, to hear Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg demand that the Prime Minister now listen to the clear will of the House of Commons.

Commenting afterwards, Dan Rogerson said:

“No one in the House of Commons can remember a time when the Government was defeated so substantially on an opposition motion.

“It reflects the strength of feeling in Parliament, and outside, that Ministers have betrayed the Gurkhas.  They have refused to acknowledge the simple, decent principle that those who are prepared for die for our country should be allowed to live here.

“Gordon Brown’s attempt to wriggle out of his obligations was callous, crass and insulting.  It’s shameful that the Government should be so determined in its refusal to repay good people for the service they have given to Britain.

“The House of Commons have spoken.  Now the Government must listen.”
