Celebrations as talking newspaper reaches 20th Birthday

North Cornwall’s talking newspaper celebrated its twentieth birthday this week at a special event in Bodmin College.

Local MP Dan Rogerson joined the Mayor and Mayoress of Bodmin, Bob and Rita Micek, to congratulate volunteers from the talking newspaper team.  The group records a compilation of local news stories from the week’s press on to cassette, to help the blind and partially-sighted.

When the newspaper was established twenty years ago, Mr Rogerson was a student at Bodmin College along with Bob and Rita’s son, Richard.

Commenting, the local MP said:

“Bodmin College’s involvement in projects like this is typical of the commitment they have shown to the community over many years.

“All the volunteers who give us their time to record the talking newspaper are making a huge difference to many people’s lives across North Cornwall.

“It’s been great to meet some of the listeners here today to hear just how they benefit.  Clearly the cassettes are as valuable today as they were twenty years ago, and I hope the project will continue for many years to come.”
