MP support for solar power

Local MP Dan Rogerson has given his backing to the “We support Solar” campaign, and signed a motion championing the technology in the House of Commons.

The campaign is targeted at government to ensure that solar owners are rewarded for the electricity that they generate.  This is known as a ‘Feed-in tariff’ (FIT), and 2010 it could mean householders with photovoltaic panels are paid approximately three to four times more for the solar electricity they generate from solar than they pay for the electricity generated by major suppliers.

The scheme would both protect the environment from CO2 emissions and insulate householders from rising electricity bills.  Feed in tariffs already encourage thousands of people to install solar PV on the roofs of homes and businesses across Europe, and the local MP is campaigning for the same to happen here from April 2010.

Commenting, Dan Rogerson said

“I very much welcome this campaign.

“As people face more difficult economic times, it’s more important than ever to make sure it pays to be green.  Feed in tariffs could make a real difference both to energy bills and to the environment.

“Hundreds of new skilled green jobs could be created in the solar power and roofing sectors in Cornwall if the feed-in tariff is set at an effective rate to encourage greater take-up of the technology.

“Other European countries are seeing real benefits from their encouragement of solar PV and the UK Government will be missing a huge opportunity if it does not follow suit.”
