Rogerson to Fight for Business in the Commons

This week sees the start of line-by-line consideration in Parliament of the Business Rates Supplement Bill.

North Cornwall's MP, Dan Rogerson, will lead for the Liberal Democrats in opposing measures that could see businesses face an extra levy to pay for projects they do not want.

Designed to help deliver London's new "Crossrail" train line, the legislation will allow councils to charge an extra business rate to help fund projects like road improvements or public transport upgrades.  Mr Rogerson has tabled amendments that would see local authorities forced to ballot firms before imposing the extra levy, to ensure the business community is satisfied that any new projects are worth what they will cost.

The House of Commons will debate the local MP's proposals this week on Tuesday and Thursday in a special 'Public Bill Committee'.

Commenting, Mr Rogerson said,

"There are the beginnings of a good idea in what the Government has proposed but as ever Ministers are afraid of democracy.

"Doubtless in some areas there will be projects that businesses might be pleased to help fund, if they are convinced that trade will increase as a result.  In our own area, the system could be used to help get the A30 upgrade between Temple and Higher Carblake off the ground.

"But if businesses are to pay more, they should get be given the choice first.  That's why I am arguing – with support from the Confederation of British Industry, the Federation of Small Businesses, and the Institute of Directors – that firms should be able to vote on any plans for projects they are asked to pay for.

"Town and County Halls do not always know what is best for business.  What could be wrong with asking the traders themselves?"
