Newquay Airport – comment from Dan Rogerson MP
Responding to news that Newquay Airport will reopen this weekend, having been granted a CAA licence, Newquay's MP, Dan Rogerson said:
"The airport and the County Council team have confounded their critics as officials have been working night and day to get the flights going again before Christmas as promised.
"The closure has been extremely frustrating for all concerned, but was ultimately unavoidable if passenger safety was to be maintained.
"I was disappointed that Ministers were in the end unwilling to assist for this short extra period.
"My MP colleagues and I will now renew our call for a full inquiry into what went wrong – both passengers and Council Tax payers deserve open, honest answers about how these problems could have arisen so late in the day.
"Today though, we should celebrate the full coming of age of Newquay Airport. It has been a remarkable transformation from declining military airfield to a growing regional hub.
"Cornwall County Council took the brave step to take on this ambitious project, and the airport will now be a vital contributor to our local economic recovery.
"Flybe's announcement that they will operate a regular Newquay to Gatwick service from the Spring is the first sign that the conversion will be a success.
