Comment from Dan Rogerson MP on hidden economy
Responding to news in a Public Accounts Committee report that HMRC is making little progress in tackling the hidden economy, North Cornwall's MP, Dan Rogerson said:
"The Public Accounts Committee's latest report shows how ridiculous it is for the Government to put in jeopardy the jobs of those who can detect errors and reveal fraud.
"Tax office closures across Cornwall and the wider South West will highly-skilled staff cast aside in the name of 'efficiency'.
"Detection rates are already low and can only be expected to fall as a result of these changes.
"So as many HMRC staff face Christmas with their jobs in the balance, the Exchequer is set to lose even more cash as sits by and allows those who do not pay their way to get off scott-free."
"I have called on the Prime Minster to review the Government's decision on Launceston tax office, and this timely report should highlight the need for his urgent attention."
