PM: HMRC will ‘Do what they can’ to save firms
The Prime Minister has committed HMRC to ‘do what they can’ to help local companies by structuring their tax payments during hard economic times, following a challenge from North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson.
The local Liberal Democrat MP told the House of Commons that a sympathetic approach in the short term was ‘crucial to the recovery of the economy’ in the long term.
Commenting after the exchange, Mr Rogerson said:
“Many local firms are struggling to meet their overheads as people tighten their belts and rein in their spending.
“Tax bills from the HMRC can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, so it’s vital that Ministers do all they can to stave off that risk while the economy is in such poor shape.
“The Prime Minister’s commitment to make the HMRC ‘do what they can’ is welcome but we need clarity from officials as to how they will meet that challenge.
“HMRC should engage constructively with local traders to ensure that no tax bill sends a business bust.”
