Local MP raises St Tudy school in the Commons
Local MP, Dan Rogerson, spoke up for St Tudy School in the House of Commons this afternoon (Monday) calling on Ministers to sort out the funding shortfall that could stymie plans for a new school building.
For the past three years the school has been working towards getting a new state-of-the-art facility because the building has been deemed substandard by education officials. Its canteen is inadequate, it does not have a school hall or playground and it lacks disabled access.
Education Minister, Sarah McCarthy-Fry, refused to meet to discuss the problems, claiming responsibility rests with the local education authority.
Commenting after the House of Commons exchange, Mr Rogerson said:
“The Minister has clearly misunderstood the situation. It’s a grant from central government that has raised people’s hopes in the community. A small adjustment of the grant would make all the difference.
“Since the Government have agreed in principle that the school needs major work– and officials have criticised the state of the current building, it is clearly unacceptable and unfair that they should take such a dismal attitude when it comes to securing the future of the renovations that are needed.
“Over £300,000 has already been spent, so stopping the project at this stage would not just be a callous betrayal of the school’s pupils but a gross waste of money into the bargain.”
