POCA decision an ‘Overdue victory for common sense’ – Rogerson

The future of thousands of Post Offices looked brighter today (Thursday) after the Work and Pensions Secretary, James Purnell, announced that the Post Office Card Account contract would remain with Post Office Limited.

The decision follows a strong campaign by local people, supported by Liberal Democrat MPs, who received thousands of campaign postcards from across the country.

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, welcomed the statement, naming it an ‘overdue victory for common sense’.

Commenting, he said:

“It’s been clear for months that the only provider who can ensure that the Card Account is available to the broadest range of people was Post Office Limited.

“That was obvious to the thousands of constituents who wrote to me, and it was obvious to me.

“That another contractor could ever have been seriously considered shows the scant regard and thin understanding that Ministers have of Britain’s rural areas.

“Senior Liberal Democrats ordered a special debate on this subject just this Monday to demand answers on the absurd delay in taking this decision.

“After the Government’s searing assault on the local Post Office network, the least it could do was remove this further looming axe over local branches.

“About time too.”
