Mother’s union knits 1000 hats for Save The Children

North Cornwall’s MP, joined the Mothers’ Union at St Michael’s Church, Newquay, this week, in a bid to bolster their campaign to knit 1000 hats for Save the Children.

The Cornish MP hadn’t knitted since his grandmother made failed attempts to teach him as a child, but Mr Rogerson got stuck in as Mothers’ Union members provided a stitch-by-stitch guide.

Save the Children has published its own ‘knit kit’ to help people make hats for children in developing countries.  The hats prevent pneumonia, which kills about 2 million children every year.

Commenting, Mr Rogerson said:

“This is an excellent initiative on Save the Children’s part, and the St Michael’s Mothers’ Union is doing sterling work.

“By cajoling as many people as possible they’ve knitted about 1000 hats.  That could be a 1000 lives saved in the developing world.

“I’m not sure my own knitting skills would get a single hat done in a 1000 years but I was pleased to learn again.  It’s about 20 years since my grandmother last tried to teach me!”
