MP joins celebration of Cornish culture

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson attended an event at the weekend to celebrate Cornwall’s rich and unique cultural heritage as well as to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Charter of Pardon.

The event, held at Kingsley Village in Fraddon, was a good chance for people, young and old, to learn more about Cornwall’s unique constitutional position, as well as to enjoy traditional Cornish fare and entertainment

The Charter of Pardon, granted in 1508, by Henry VII, gave Cornwall legal rights to hold its own Parliament and the Cornish Stannary Parliament last assembled at Truro over 250 years ago

Commenting, Dan Rogerson said:

“The event was a real success and I think people who attended went away truly surprised how much they had learnt about Cornish heritage.

“Cornwall’s Stannary Parliament is still entitled to sit but only if the Duke of Cornwall calls it. It’s a retrograde precedent that so much of our Government has to happen from London when we should have the capability to decide our own affairs.

“I’d like to congratulate the organisers for putting on this event and I will continue to work with those who work so hard to increase understanding of Cornwall’s rich cultural life past and present.”
