Progress on 30 mile bus rule

Ministers and bus companies have told a cross-party group of rural MPs that they have reached an agreement on running bus routes of thirty miles or more.

The news came this week at the All Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Services, in a special meeting chaired by North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson.

Mr Rogerson has written to Transport Minister, Rosie Winterton, to ask for further clarification on the arrangements she has made.

Commenting, he said:

“Both the bus companies represented at the meeting, and the Minister concerned appeared to be satisfied with the agreement they had reached.

“However, both were thin on the detail.

“Running rural bus services is difficult enough without unnecessary regulation, so I will be asking Rosie Winterton for concrete assurances.

“I want to know that no constituent of mine will ever again be marched off a bus, only to have its route number changed, before being marched back on again.

“The practice is farcical and must end.”
