Local carers are ‘undervalued by society and neglected by the Government’ according to North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson.

Mr Rogerson visited a carer’s support group in Newquay this week to promote Carers’ Week and to run a mini-surgery for carers to deal with the problems they face in the tax and benefits system.

Carer’s Week runs from 9th June, as an initiative to promote the needs of those who look after family or friends, often with little or no financial support.

Commenting after the visit, local MP Dan Rogerson said:

“The benefits system provides a clear disincentive to carers to get substantial paid employment, by penalising those who try to take time away from those in their care.”

“That denies the local economy their skills and precludes the carers themselves from having any kind of social life.”

“I visited this group in December last year, and I was pleased to return today.”

“As ever, I have taken away the difficulties carers face – both in terms of policy that should change nationally, and in terms of the individual problems people here have been having, so that I can try to resolve those issues.”
