Learning Shop closures

Responding to news that Cornwall College is to close local Learning Shops, North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson said:

“People in my constituency and across Cornwall will doubtless be very sad to hear of these closures.

“Local campaigners collected over 1000 signatures in support of a service which was used and valued in the area.

“I believe that there was a bigger potential market for the courses offered, and that the shops could have been saved.

“Now that a final decision has been made, Cornwall College must take all possible steps to see that learning provision is made elsewhere – so that existing learners and new enrollers alike are able to gain the vital skills they need to operate in our increasingly knowledge-based local economy.”

Falmouth and Camborne MP, Julia Goldsworthy added:

"I have been inundated by constituents who have found the Learning Shops valuable in helping them get to grips with rapidly changing technology.

"It's a real shame that local people will now lose that service, despite their excellent campaign.

"With funding priorities set by Government increasingly steering away from adult courses, this is a hammer blow to education in the County.

"We will be pressing Education Ministers on this at the next available opportunity.  They clearly don't understand that improving Cornwall's economy depends on adult education of this kind."
