MP welcomes adult autism audit

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, this week said a parliamentary campaign to recognise the needs of autistic adults had been successful.

Care Services Minister, Ivan Lewis, announced a £500,000 audit of autistic adults; the first such study ever undertaken in the United Kingdom.

Mr Rogerson signed a Commons motion earlier this year, supporting the National Autism Society’s Think Differently About Autism – I Exist campaign.

Commenting, he said:

“60% of adults with autism do not receive enough support to match their needs. This can have a devastating impact on those who have the condition and their families.

“Indeed we recently revealed figures showing a striking number of autistic adults suffering mental health problems.

“The National Autistic Society has done great work in bringing this matter to Parliament’s attention, in finally getting the Government to take action.

“The sooner the audit gets underway, the sooner we can ensure people get the services they need and deserve.”

That this House agrees that all adults with autism should be supported to achieve their potential, including those with Asperger's syndrome; recognises that too many adults with autism are isolated and ignored, struggle to access support and are heavily dependent on their families; congratulates The National Autistic Society for highlighting these issues in its campaign, Think Differently About Autism – I Exist; believes that recording the number of adults with autism nationally and locally would help to improve the planning and delivery of services; further believes that the barriers that prevent adults with autism from accessing services can be overcome; further believes that social support and person-centred services for adults with autism are required; and calls on the Government to develop its expertise in autism and work with local authorities and primary care trusts to put in place the changes that will transform the lives of adults with autism.
