MP urges veterans to apply for badges
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, is urging those who have served in the armed forces to apply for badges in recognition of their service.
The MP’s office has a stock of application forms for three types of badge – one for former members of the Women’s Land Army and Women’s Timber Corps, another for UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans and a final category for those who served in Britain’s armed forces.
The Secretary of State is due to present Women’s Land Army badges later this year. The other two categories are sent through the post, though veterans are sometimes asked to attend formal presentations, some of which will take place in Blackpool during Veterans Week 2008.
Commenting, Dan Rogerson said:
“These badges are the least our veterans deserve as a tribute to their service.
“Of course, the world wars are at the forefront of our minds when we think of the armed forces in action to defend our way of life.
“But more recent deployments too deserve recognition so I’m pleased these badges are available to all those who have served in our armed forces, no matter the conflict.
“The Women’s Land Army provided vital support for the country during the world wars by freeing men to go to the frontline. In peacetime, the Land Girls kept their effort up until demobilisation was complete. It’s good news that their efforts are now being recognised too.”
