Newquay carers secure MP’s support

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, this week met with a support group for carers, in Newquay.

The local MP listened to the problems carers face in the tax and benefits system, which penalises them for working by removing carers’ allowance after only a few hours’ paid employment.

The carers’ group also took the opportunity to raise the absence of adequate respite care to take the pressure off full-time carers, and the shortage of suitable housing for those in their care.

Commenting after the meeting, Mr Rogerson said:

“There is very clearly an acute lack of recognition for the work these people do day in, day out to look after those in their care.

“That the system provides such a sharp disincentive to work does not just deny the local economy their skills but keeps too many carers isolated from any social life whatever.

“I will be taking up several of the specific cases raised with me today, and just last week, in the House of Commons, I raised the matter of housing for people who have physical disabilities or mental health problems.  I want to see the Government’s Housing and Regeneration Bill amended to take account of those particular needs.

“I also plan to work with the group to promote “Carers’ Week” next year.”
