MP brings BT chiefs to Treglasta
Following a series of meetings in Westminster with senior executives from BT, local MP, Dan Rogerson, brought BT Openreach Regional Director, Bob Challacombe, and Area Manager, Pat Garland, to North Cornwall this week.
They went to Treglasta to meet residents who’ve suffered from poor quality lines. Treglasta residents are barely able to make voice calls, let alone get broadband internet access. Following a large number of letters to Mr Rogerson’s office, the BT Regional Director promised to look at each telephone line on a case-by-case basis, and promised to report back before Christmas.
BT is not under any obligation to supply broadband services to rural residents, though it is legally bound to provide a good quality voice line. Dan Rogerson has written to the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to lobby for the “Universal Service Obligation” to be updated, to ensure broadband internet access is available across the country.
Commenting, he said:
“I’m pleased BT has come down to see the problems people in North Cornwall have been having with the company.
“I look forward to hearing back from the Regional Director on each of the cases I have raised.
“Meanwhile, it must now be absurd for those in the most rural and remote areas of the country to be cut off from broadband services. Areas like ours need it more than anywhere else! I will be lobbying the government to bring the Universal Service Obligation into the 21st century.”
