Government u-turn on schools tax

Cornwall’s five Liberal Democrat MPs have today (Tuesday) welcomed news that the government is scrapping plans to tax schools which have managed their budgets well.

Liberal Democrats led a national campaign against the plans, which would have imposed a 5% tax on all school balances – hitting hardest schools which had saved money for specific projects.

Commenting, North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, said:

“It was about time the Government put these proposals where they belong – in the departmental waste paper basket.

“Headteachers and governing bodies were furious with these plans, which would have robbed 20,500 prudent schools across the country of some £250 million over three years.”
