Residents and visitors have flocked to back local MP Dan Rogerson’s call for BT to replace the harbour phone box in Boscastle.

Locals recalled the sight of the old red box being washed away in devastating floods as they signed Mr Rogerson’s petition at a rate of more than two a minute. People presently have to traipse some three quarters of a mile up a steep hill to make a call from the village, which has little or no mobile signal on most networks.

Local campaigners collected over 200 signatures in ninety minutes and the Liberal Democrat MP has left further sheets for people to support his call. He is due to meet representatives of BT in Westminster when Parliament returns and, when more residents have had a chance to add their backing, he will send the full petition to the company’s Chief Executive.

Commenting after his morning in Boscastle, Mr Rogerson said:

“Villagers and visitors alike are aghast that they have to undertake such a trek to find a call box.

“When Boscastle’s red box was washed away, we were promised a replacement but it’s never emerged and local people are rightly dismayed. The strength of feeling here is vividly illustrated by the substantial support our campaign has received in this short period.

“Boscastle is top of the list of a number of issues I want to raise with BT – not least the company’s support for local post offices and their customer service – so I look forward to meeting their representatives soon.

“Meanwhile, if you want to add support to the campaign, please contact my office and we’ll send you some petition sheets.”
