Free parcels not just for Christmas – MP
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, has welcomed the MoD’s introduction of a free delivery service for families sending packages to loved ones in the armed forces.
The move comes after considerable public and parliamentary pressure. The local Liberal Democrat MP wrote to Ministers on constituents’ behalf to support the campaign.
Mr Rogerson says that the move is ‘long overdue’ and is backing the Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Menzies Campbell’s call for the MoD to work with Royal Mail to extend free weekly care parcels beyond Christmas.
Commenting, he said:
“It is a national disgrace that those who have been sent to serve their country should also see their loved ones charged through the nose just to send them the weekly care parcels which are so vital to morale.
“That Ministers have finally bent on this shows that they concede that principle.
“The wars they have begun will certainly not be over by Christmas. Having set in train so much unnecessary loss of life, the least they can do is make sure our troops receive parcels from their families for as long as they are serving overseas.”
