North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, this week visited Boscastle to meet with villagers and local Councillors following Thursday’s floods there.

The local MP paid tribute to the emergency services’ quick work in pumping water out of people’s homes and said that among the chaos was an “overwhelming sense of relief” that flood defences had largely kept any more serious threat at bay.

Mr Rogerson has written to the Environment Agency and the County Council to ask what measures can be taken to avoid further floods as a result of poor drainage capacity on Boscastle’s roadways.

Commenting, Mr Rogerson said:

“Just as in 2004, the villagers are being tremendously stoical – and they are very supportive of each other.  There’s a real community spirit here and I know that Boscastle will overcome this latest setback.

“What is heartening is that the similarities with 2004 end there.  The new flood defences have done their job and kept the river within its banks.  I’m very concerned, though, that the Environment Agency should help the County Council improve local drainage to avoid even the smaller scale floods we saw last Thursday.

“Obviously heavy rain of this kind is the exception rather than the rule, but we must be prepared for it if people’s homes and livelihoods are to be protected.

“Meanwhile, if villagers have any problems with insurance companies or government agencies, they should get in touch with my office.”
