Government’s Post Office plan takes no account of rural deprivation
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, has said that after 4000 Labour Post Office closures and 3500 under the Conservatives it’s time government took account of rural deprivation.
The Department for Trade and Industry this week published the results of their consultation on Post Office closures and said it would make sure that 99% of the total population in deprived urban areas would be within a mile of the Post Office. In rural areas though, 5% of the population would be left with no Post Office within three miles.
Commenting, Mr Rogerson said:
“What about deprived rural areas?
“Successive governments shamble around rural affairs policy as though deprivation is the sole province of northern towns. In Cornwall, we know it isn’t.
“What we don’t know is where the latest Ministerial axe is going to fall.
“Post Offices are vital centres in our communities. I will be seeking to defend them at every turn.”
