MP to take on “Double Whammy” threat to Westcountry postal service
North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, has called for a meeting with the Chief Executive of the postal services regulator, Postcomm, to discuss Royal Mail proposals which would see rates for delivering business mail to peripheral parts of the country rise.
If Postcomm approve Royal Mail’s plan, the prices charged for business mail delivered in rural and less populated areas would go up, while prices for delivery to big cities would fall.
The Liberal Democrat MP is to take the case against the move to the regulator on 22nd May.
Commenting, Mr Rogerson said:
“Businesses across the Westcountry could find that their costs rise if Royal Mail’s plan is allowed to go ahead.
“They may also find that other businesses sending goods to our area from elsewhere will charge more for postage and packing to the Westcountry.
“That must be bad news for jobs – and bad news for consumers, as these costs would naturally be passed on to the customer.
“I will be arguing strongly that Postcomm should say ‘no’ to this unjustified double whammy.”
