‘Keep Cornwall at the cutting edge’ – MPs

Cornwall’s MPs are calling on the general public to rally behind proposals which would win Cornwall huge new funding at Eden.

Plans for a phenomenal new super-structure should be supported to keep Cornwall at the forefront of innovation and discovery, according to MPs.

‘The Edge’ – a landmark construction designed to explore life under climate change – is the next phase in The Eden Project. The mammoth building aims to look at how human beings can flourish under changing conditions, and examines the ways that communities have dealt with transformation in the past.

The project is also environmentally ambitious, as the building would potentially collect all of the water that it needs from rainfall, and create more energy than it uses.

The future of the plans depend on £50million from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘People’s Millions’ award. Competing projects will be short-listed in October this year, and finalists will be put up for a public vote.

Cornwall’s Liberal Democrat MPs are encouraging their constituents to support the project, which they say will secure Cornwall’s status as a leader in design and sustainability.

Commenting, MP for Truro & St Austell Matthew Taylor said:

“This is a fantastic project and the world hasn’t seen anything like it. It is about exploring life on the edge, and being on the edge of survival, and for Cornwall it also means staying at the cutting edge – leading the exploration of climate change, and finding new and exciting ways to cope and prosper. I hope everyone will get behind the proposal if it gets to public vote – it would be great to see Cornwall win.

North Cornwall’s MP, Dan Rogerson, added:

“Eden is a showcase for Cornwall.  It has generated a great deal of business and tourism, which is vital to our local economy.  With this development the Project can now be an environmental showcase too – not just of how life might be in a changed climate but of how we can all slow climate change down.  The Big Lottery Fund should back this initiative: it will be good for Cornwall and good for the planet – it deserves our support.”
