MPs’ alarm at ‘Appalling rise’ in Hit and Runs
The five-strong team of Liberal Democrat MPs in Cornwall have expressed their alarm at recent Liberal Democrat research showing a 10% rise in convictions of hit and run drivers – those who fail to stop after an accident – since 2000 across Britain. However one of the biggest increases has been in the Devon and Cornwall region with a staggering 193% increase.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat MP for South East Cornwall, Colin Breed MP said,
"Any traffic accident is traumatic, but where the driver fails to stop and help it is so much more so. I am appalled that the number of convictions has risen over the past few years and in particular at the unacceptable increase in Cornwall."
Dan Rogerson, Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, added,
"Given that many more incidents go unreported, and the number of road traffic police officers has fallen over the period examined, these figures may only be the tip of the iceberg."
