MPs make case for “Cornwall-friendly” high speed trains

Cornwall's MPs are to meet Transport Minister, Derek Twigg MP, to discuss plans for new High Speed Trains, which would shorten journey times between London and Penzance. The specification for the new train sets is presently being drawn up by Minister and the rail companies.

Truro and St Austell MP, Matthew Taylor, requested the meeting to ensure that the Minister understands the importance of the replacement High Speed trains being suitable for the route. Unlike other High Speed Train
routes, this require frequent train stops so the new train needs to be able to stop and start quickly to cut journey times.

The meeting will take place on October 11th.

Commenting, Matthew Taylor MP (Truro and St Austell) said:
"I'm looking forward to meeting the Minister and pressing the case for Cornwall-friendly trains, when the old High Speed Trains are replaced. It's particularly vital for Cornish business that links to Cornwall are improved, not cut back, and I will make sure that the Minister realises
that when the new trains are designed."

Commenting, Colin Breed MP (South East Cornwall) added:
"Good transport links are essential to economic stability and growth in Cornwall. Trains that run quickly through to Penzance on a regular basis, in good time, provide a back bone for our public transport network."

Most High Speed routes have few stations, long distances apart, but Cornwall is very different. As well as higher speeds on the longer stretches, the new trains will have to have increased acceleration and deceleration times, making them as effective on the Cornish railway where stops are more frequent.
