Cornish MPs slam Goverment hypocrisy over adult education
Cornish Liberal Democrat MPs have attacked the Government for their hypocrisy over adult learning. As the Labour Government support Adult Learners' Week 2006 (21st – 26th May) they have simultaneously announced cuts of 200, 000 adult education and training course places across England, including at least 4,000 places in Cornwall. The five Cornish MPs have tabled a Commons motion which highlights the duplicity of the Government’s position over adult learning.
Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall, said,
"In Cornwall we have skilled teachers and a great number of adults who want to develop their knowledge and skills. Unless the Government reverses its decision on funding cuts, these opportunities will be missed. Courses such as those provided by the Duchy Outreach programme in Launceston and the Bodmin Access course are already set to finish. If the Government is serious about education it will think again."
Colin Breed, MP for South East Cornwall added,
"It is typical of this Government to give with one hand to an initiative such as Adult Learners' Week and at the same time take away funding to the adult education system. The Government have simply not invested enough money to meet all its priorities and as a result colleges are forced to axe places. It is vital that the Government properly fund its new priorities as well as safeguarding existing provision so that all adults have access to the learning that they need."
