SW Lib Dem MPs join Western Morning News in presentation of water charges petition

Today Liberal Democrat MPs in Devon and Cornwall were delighted to join the Western Morning News in presenting their petition on unfair water charges to 10 Downing Street.

The Lib Dems have been pressing the Government ever since the privatisation of the water industry under the Conservatives for action to tackle the obscenely high water charges that the people of the South West face.

They have been at the forefront of this campaign with Adrian Sanders, MP for Torbay presenting a Bill to Parliament on 15th March 2006 which aimed to establish a limit on the percentage of household income spent on water and sewerage charges and to provide for the capping of domestic water and sewerage charges so that the percentage limit is not exceeded.

Commenting on today's event Adrian Sanders MP said:

"How can it be fair that a state pensioner in the South West has less money after paying their essential bills, like water, than a state pensioner in the Prime Minister’s constituency? We are one country and all pensioners deserve a fair deal."
