MPs hope Minister’s ‘Fact-Finding’ will give her food for thought
Cornwall's Liberal Democrat MPs are calling on the Government to show genuine commitment to improving transport links in the county, ahead of Transport Minister Karen Buck's visit tomorrow and Thursday (1st and 2nd March). The Minister is due to visit Newquay airport and the Isles of Scilly.
North Cornwall MP, Dan Rogerson said:
"I am glad that the Minister is demonstrating Government commitment to Newquay Airport. The Liberal Democrat controlled County Council has invested money in improving this important facility and they deserve a strong package of Government support to ensure that the airport remains a success."
"The Airport Development charge is shifting the cost from local taxpayers to airport users, as is right and proper. Passengers have continued to use Newquay and the improved airport will be welcomed."
West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly MP, Andrew George, said:
"Whilst on the Isles of Scilly I hope that the Minister will have a chance to speak to the Route Partnership about aspirations to replace the ageing Scillonian ferry ? which cannot operate at this time of year because of the sea conditions."
"And I hope she will speak to islanders about what they think of their treatment by the Government and the exorbitant transport costs added to every service and good brought on and off the islands, compared to the tens of millions of pounds in subsidies granted to the inhabitants of Scottish islands."
"Once having found that fact, I hope she will then have an opportunity to reflect upon it on her return journey."
