Great results for Lib Dems in North Cornwall By-elections
The Liberal Democrats in North Cornwall had two good results in the two local council by-elections held on Thursday 16th February.
In Bodmin St. Mary's ward of North Cornwall District Council, Lib Dem Tristan Trevenna won with a massive 69% of the vote over the Conservative candidate. The by-election was caused by the death of Terry Hocking, an Independent Councillor, but a member of the Conservative Party. The Lib Dem vote in Bodmin St. Mary's increased by 30% from the last time it was fought in 2003.
In Edgcumbe North ward of Restormel Borough Council, Lib Dem candidate Sandy Carter missed out to the Conservatives, but managed to increase the Lib Dem share of the vote by 26%. The ward was held by the Conservatives at the elections in 2003, with the Lib Dem share of the vote just 16%.
Dan Rogerson, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Cornwall congratulated both candidates and said:
"I'd like to congratulate both candidates on great campaigns focused on the issues that local people care about."
"I know Tristan will make an excellent Councillor alongside our other Lib Dem in the ward, Ann Kerridge. I'm looking forward to working with them both representing Bodmin to the best of our abilities."
"Although Sandy missed out in Newquay, he can be proud of the positive campaign that he ran, and for increasing the Lib Dem share of the vote by so much in an area that has such a history of election Conservative candidates."
