Rogerson takes the helm as South West Lib Dems prepare to fight water charges

The Liberal Democrats' five MPs for Cornwall met with their Devon counterparts for the first time in the new parliament today to elect Dan Rogerson, the newly elected MP for North Cornwall as Chair of their group.

The 'South West Team' of MPs has been meeting each week with key stakeholders from the two counties since 1992.

Commenting after the meeting Dan Rogerson said, "I'm delighted to have been elected by MPs across Devon and, of course, our full slate of five Cornish MPs to lead the fight for our area. We intend to get straight to work with the most pressing common problem facing our constituents. Water charges across the South West are out of control."

Liberal Democrats across the South West collected signatures in the general election, petitioning in protest at the the charges, which are among the highest in the country.

Nick Harvey, North Devon MP since 1992 added, "The Liberal Democrat parliamentary team for our two counties has never been stronger than it is today. I'm very pleased indeed that Dan Rogerson, as a new member of our team, has taken this early lead."

"Our mandate from the election shows the support of thousands of our constituents for the Liberal Democrat campaign for a fair deal on water charges. The Government cannot ignore the plight of people in Devon and Cornwall."
