Liberal Democrats Call for Government Action on Newquay Airport

The Liberal Democrat team visit Newquay Airport. From l to r Colin Jarvis (Cornwall County Council), Sir Menzies Campbell MP, Paul Tyler MP, Dan RogersonDan Rogerson said, "The Cornish economy is improving all the time with new and expanding companies bringing more jobs. However, we must have the vital air links to London and the rest of the country to make sure that this trend continues. We need Government decisions to be taken quickly on the future of St Mawgan airbase so that the County Council knows how best to plan for the future. Delays in decision making are unacceptable."

Paul Tyler MP said, "I am constantly seeking assurances from ministers that they will bear in mind the importance of Newquay Airport to the economy here in Cornwall. There are all sort of ways in which the airport can be developed to make it profitable, lifting the burden from local taxpayers. However, in order to explore these possibilities we must know what the Ministry of Defence intends to do with St Mawgan."

Sir Menzies Campbell added, "Liberal Democrats nationally are committed to preserving regional airports and all the good they do for the local economy. It has been useful to hear how much the future here in Newquay depends upon Government decisions and I am supporting Dan Rogerson and Paul Tyler in their calls for a better Government response."

The MPs will be seeking urgent assurances that the two ministers concerned, of Transport and Defence, will make a joint announcement about the future of the RAF base at St Mawgan and its implications for this civil airport.

The three Liberal Democrat representatives met with Cornwall County Council's Colin Jarvis who updated them on the questions surrounding the airport's future.
